The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church founded in 1865, has been supporting the needy in the United States without discrimination for more than 130 years. Each year, approximately 295,000 community members receive support from the Salvation Army Independence Force through the broadest range of social services ranging from food to hungry people, relief for victims, support for people with disabilities, outreach to the elderly and disease, clothing and shelter for the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. Eighty-four cents of every dollar spent goes to support these services in the Kansas and Western Missouri divisions.
